In the small temple town of Tiruthani, the fifth abode of Lord Muruga, lies the Peacock hospital, a 100-bed multi-specialty hospital, offering the best-in-class treatment to the surrounding villages and towns. Tiruthani is a rustic town belonging to the Tiruvallur district, near Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The birthplace of Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, the 2nd Indian President, is surrounded by small towns like Tiruvallur, Arakkonam, Sholingur, and Nagari. The Peacock Hospital is the dream and vision of Dr. M. Sree Kiran, who is also its Managing Director.
Dr. M. Sree Kiran grew up in a family of doctors who has served their townspeople for years. After completing MCh Urology, Dr. M. Sree Kiran returned home to Tiruthani to follow his father’s path. He was however shocked at the state of affairs in his beloved hometown. Despite being a bustling temple town, Tiruthani had only a handful of small clinics to treat minor ailments befalling the locals. The humble 10-bedded nursing home run by his father was by far the biggest hospital that the town had to offer. All major life-threatening cases like heart attacks, strokes, polytrauma, road traffic accidents, etc had to be referred to the closest city, Chennai, which was almost 3 hours away. Many succumbed to their injuries or maladies even before reaching Chennai.
Dr. M. Sree Kiran soon realized that Tiruthani had the need and the potential to sustain a 24x7 multi-specialty hospital. It was also his chance to give back to the beloved town that had provided for his family for 3 generations. For a long period, the dream remained just that, a dream. However, one incident became the turning point for changing the dream into a reality.
Once Dr. Sree Kiran’s previous hospital's management had been reluctant to stock a costly, life-saving drug used to treat heart attacks. Early one morning, the father of a close friend of Dr. M. Sree Kiran was rushed into the clinic as he had suffered a heart attack. Fortunately, Dr. M. Sree Kiran had stocked the drug, despite previous hospital's disapproval. The timely administration of the drug ended up saving the man’s life. This incident finally pushed Dr. M. Sree Kiran to go down the path of building a full-fledged hospital in his hometown with all the modern amenities necessary to save lives.
The path to fulfilling his dreams was not easy. Dr. M. Sree Kiran struggled to get funding as it was a greenfield project with no proven track record. No one believed that a small town like Tiruthani needed such a huge hospital or that people here could get used to the high-class treatment. Though the idea to construct a hospital began in 2012, it took many years to become a reality.
The Peacock Hospital was inaugurated by Dr. J Radhakrishnan, Principal Secretary to the Tamil Nadu Government, Health and Family Welfare Department on April 30, 2017. After the inauguration, the hospital has continued to grow from strength to strength. The 100-bed hospital now boasts an MRI, CT, Cath Lab, ECHO machine, Blood bank, IVF facility, ICU, hi-tech labs dialysis stations, CSSDs, hi-tech OTs, and much more. The team of 15 doctors, who are the cream of the crop, along with the well-trained nurses, paramedics, and technicians is the heart and soul of the hospital. The peacock hospital is the only multi-specialty hospital in a 50 Km radius of Tiruthani offering world-class services to the people in and around the area.
COVID proved to be the testing ground for both the Peacock Hospital and its founder, Dr. Sree Kiran. In 2020, when the COVID lockdown was announced, Peacock Hospital was the only functional hospital in the whole of Tiruthani. It also became one of the very few hospitals in the whole of Tamil Nadu that was given permission to treat COVID patients. Patients flowed in from all around the town and neighboring villages.
Despite the strict lockdown and multiple roadblocks faced by the staff, Peacock hospital continued to serve its patients relentlessly. Dr. M. Sree Kiran offered free food, lodging, and transportation for his entire staff to ensure the safety of the staff and their families. He worked relentlessly to guide and support his staff, their family members, and his patients throughout the tough COVID months. He and his team worked day in, and day out to ensure a continuous supply of oxygen, which was in short supply. The struggle to ensure oxygen to the patients in need inspired him to start an oxygen plant within the premises. Now, the peacock hospital boasts a full-fledged, in-house oxygen plant with a capacity of 180 liters of oxygen per minute.
On the strength of its work, the Peacock Hospital has now entry-level NABH accreditation and is seeking to get fully accredited soon. With the roaring success of Peacock hospital, Dr. M. Sree Kiran plans on diving further deeper into the rural countryside to provide state-of-the-art treatment to his fellow people. The contentment and sense of purpose he feels are driving Dr. M. Sree Kiran to reach newer heights.
